I am a retiree with an art school background. I had a lamp very similar to this Luxo for many years. It is my hope this Luxo combo lamp will last the remainder of my life because I do like it. However, I wanted to change the CFL bulb which came with the lamp with a 75 watt replacement (also 14 watts actual usage), LED bulb. I put in a General Electric Reveal LED HD+ bulb. I used to love the GE Reveal incandescent bulbs when they were still available. The GE fit into the lamp socket and worked, but it weighed twice as much as the CFL bulb, in addition to being much longer, so it stuck out past the rim of the shade. I worried about possibly putting a strain on the lamp because of the weight of this larger LED bulb, so decided against using it. I was able to find at a local store a general purpose GE Soft White LED bulb of the same size as the CFL (the same A19 size with 800 lumens brightness and 2700K warm light appearance; which is also a 60 watt replacement bulb, but this LED uses 10 watts of power instead of the 14 watts used by the CFL). My eyes sometimes get irritated by fluorescent lights, which is why I was hoping to find a replacement. The circular (22 watt circline) bulb which also came with this combo lamp is fluorescent, as it should be. It doesn't seem to bother me when I have it turned on at the same time as the new LED bulb. With both bulbs turned on, I have a balanced light, which is how this lamp was designed.I've been using these for 20 years--I have three, and I love them. Of course I have a mother lode of 100W, 1690-lumen incandescents, which you need for these--don't be fooled by the low-wattage one they include in the package. (Since the ban, you can't get normal 100W bulbs easily, but there are places where you can buy 100W halogens that fit normal medium base light sockets like this one. You really want >1500 lumens, trust me.)The combination of a cool white fluorescent and a 100W incandescent gives a beautiful uniform low-contrast light that's first rate for close work.Don't be fooled by the cheap 'n' nasty Ledu knockoffs! It would be five stars, except that the last one of these I bought had springs too weak to hold it up--I had to put another spring in parallel with each one. (I had a big spring assortment from Harbor Freight in my workbench drawer, so this only took a few minutes.)This is similar to the other 2 Luxo lights that I have. Well made, solid, simple. I bought the first one 46 years ago and it's still my desk lamp and still going strong! This new one is now, of all things, a workshop lamp. (Older, tired eyes need help in retirement with sharpening saws and other close work!) The lamps duel bulbs add to the intensity and temperature of the light. The lamp comes with a Mickey-Mouse LED? bulb in the center. I replaced that with a 100w real-live light bulb - works well. The LED gave off too little light. My only real gripe is the switch arrangement. The fluorescent ring has to be switched on separately on top of the lamp - a minor inconvenience. All and all I'm quite happy with this lamp. Maybe you do sometimes get what you pay for.As with all my past Luxo Lamps I am greatly pleased with just how substantial the lamp is. By comparison to other lamps for fastening to a table (for instance a drafting table)this one will last forever. (As my other ones have.)But the only kvetch I have is that the silly fluorescent bulb that comes with the lamp is too puny. It adds no increase in the light level of brightness. Considering what an investment the thing is you should use a wonderful 70 watt (converted to) LED. It also adds a bit of warmth to the light that no matter how hard the florescent manufacturing companies try, can't match. This is a well-made product with one major flaw. The compact fluorescent bulb it comes with is quite dim, so I replaced it with a brighter LED bulb. However, the LED bulb is significantly heavier than the CF bulb, and the springs are not strong enough to support the lamp head, even with the ring-fluorescent bulb removed. I wrote to Luxo to learn whether they can provide a solution, but after two months I have not received a reply. My solution was to use a 72-watt incandescent bulb, which works fine but uses more energy than I would like.It is well-built as advertised -I should hope so for the price- but the circular fluorescent light is very slow to come on and you have to hold down an awkward switch for several seconds until it does. I find it a little bothersome to have to operate two separate switches in separate locations to get full illumination.Mine came with a self-ballasted 2700 K compact fluorescent for the center light instead of an incandescent. For so long my living room was not sufficiently lit. I would struggle to read books, to spot misplaced items, to decide which button to press on my TV remote control; constantly changing the channel when I meant only to change the volume. When I found this lamp, elation swelled in my heart. I had no doubt over its quality as I had seen it in many movies before, but even I couldn't predict its excellence. The rays of light it exudes when I turn it on make my living room look alive, like it's being lit by the evening sun, streaking through light clouds. The details of my living room become so clear; the world becomes high definition even without the HD glasses I bought at Target. This lamp has changed my life, and I know that it will change yours.
